Impacted Communities

Communities Impacted by the Mohawk Institute

The Survivors’ Secretariat is committed to shedding light on the lived experiences of Survivors who attended the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. Children were often forcibly taken from over 60 Indigenous communities across Canada and two distinct regions-James Bay and Hudson Bay. They were often separated from their families without a chance to say goodbye, and were transported by train or plane to a place that would profoundly shape their lives. While early estimates suggested over 15,000 children from about 20 communities attended, the number of impacted communities continues to grow as more records emerge.

Recognizing Communities Impacted by the Mohawk Institute

Our work is far from over. Many communities remain undocumented, and each new discovery broadens our understanding of the Institute’s devastating reach. The Secretariat remains dedicated to uncovering and honouring every life impacted by the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. Below is a chart of all identified impacted communities, which we will continue to update as new information comes to light.

Disclaimer

Over the years, communities have undergone changes, including amalgamations and name adjustments. Additionally, spelling and record-keeping practices have varied widely, with many records not accurately recorded by the institute at the time.

An example of communities being mis-recorded over the years is evident when looking at the Munsee Delaware Nation. The community has been recorded in the following ways:

Muncey / Muncey Thames / Muncie / Muncey Town / Muncees of the Thames
