Remembering the Children

In Memoriam

The Survivors’ Secretariat strives to remember and honour each child who was taken from their home, culture, and family and forced to attend the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School located within Brantford, Ontario.

The Survivors’ Secretariat is dedicated to uncovering and documenting the names, lives, and fates of the children who never returned home. We believe we need to remember them into history. Their lives were sacred and deserve to be accounted for.

Bringing Their Memories
Home

Since 2021, the Survivors’ Secretariat has identified an additional 57* known child deaths which raises the total to 105* known children who perished while associated with the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. *As of February 2025

Information about child attendees is being compiled and tagged for the eventual transfer into a Community Archive. Before this information can be made public the issues around data governance and data sovereignty will need to be addressed. As such, the Survivors’ Secretariat is not publishing these additional names until we are able to discuss privacy concerns of Survivors, their families and impacted communities.

As we continue this journey, we hold space for every lost child and work to ensure they are never forgotten.

Support Services Available to Survivors

The Secretariat works within a trauma-informed paradigm. As such, each Survivor and their family will have a unique way in which they process information and move forward on their journey. We recognize that the information on this page can be triggering for many people. If you require immediate support, please contact the services listed at the bottom of this page.

Investigations into Known Child Deaths

Multijurisdictional Police Taskforce

In 2021, a Multijurisdictional Police Taskforce (MJPTF) was launched to investigate the 48 names that appear in the NCTR’s Mohawk Institute In Memoriam. This investigation closed in February 2023 to pursue a coroner’s investigations. As of November 2024, a final report on the 48 known child is still forthcoming from the MJPTF.

Coroner’s Investigation

Survivors’ Secretariat is now working with the Office of the Chief Coroner (OCC) for Ontario to pursue a coroner’s investigation. This switch from a criminal investigation allows the Secretariat to pivot focus from perpetrators to victims.

Analysis of Documents Collected

The Secretariat employs an investigative advisor and data librarian to analyze information obtained through records and document collections. This is a slow and arduous process as we are dealing with memories of children and want to ensure we are thorough in our work.
